WCAG accessibility checklist for Android apps

A short working checklist for Compose and View-based apps. Use it alongside manual TalkBack testing.

Labels and names

  • Every informative image and icon button has a content description. Decorative images are hidden from accessibility services.
  • Form fields have visible labels, not placeholder text alone.
  • Custom controls expose a role and state.

Touch and input

  • Touch targets are at least 48dp by 48dp.
  • Gestures that need dragging or multi-finger input have a single-tap alternative.

Colour and text

  • Text contrast is at least 4.5:1, or 3:1 for large text.
  • Information is never conveyed by colour alone.
  • The layout works at 200% font size without clipped or overlapping text.

Structure and focus

  • Headings are marked so TalkBack users can jump between sections.
  • Reading order follows the visual order.
  • Focus moves to new dialogs and returns afterwards.

Testing

  • Run the app with TalkBack on, with your eyes off the screen.
  • Run Google's Accessibility Test Framework or Accessibility Scanner on key screens.
  • Add automated checks to CI so new issues are caught on every build.
  • Keep dated records of what you tested.
Meeting every item above does not make an app compliant. It is a starting point for your own process. Read the EAA guide.
